Ms. Madhavi Ayyappan joined Talekar & Associates as a Trainee Associate in 2016 after graduating from D.E.S. Navalmal Firodia Law College. Her exceptional performance, unwavering commitment, and fine legal acumen led to her rapid rise within the firm, and in 2020, she became one of the youngest lawyers to be inducted as a Partner.
A Diverse & Versatile Litigation Practice
Ms. Madhavi has established a remarkably diverse litigation practice, regularly appearing before a wide range of judicial and quasi-judicial forums, including the High Court of Bombay, Sessions Court, Maharashtra Administrative Tribunal, Small Causes Court, Debts Recovery Tribunal, National Green Tribunal, and the National Company Law Tribunal. Her practice is distinguished by her fine drafting skills and her ability to devise innovative and effective solutions for clients facing complex legal issues.

Ms. Ayyappan has also represented numerous government bodies on behalf of the Firm, such as the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), Pune Municipal Corporation, Igatpuri Municipal Council, Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), in critical matters before the Hon'ble High Court of Bombay as well as other fora including institutional arbitration.
Landmark Cases & Judgments
Ms. Ayyappan has assisted and conducted on several significant and high-stakes cases:
- Constitutional Law: She has worked on crucial constitutional matters, including the challenge to the Maratha reservation, petitions concerning the anti-defection law, and cases examining the Governor's power to nominate members to the legislative council.
- Environmental Law: Ms. Ayyappan has represented several matters pertaining environment such as noise pollution (including the DJ ban case), the tree felling by the Nashik Municipal Corporation.
- Slum Rehabilitation Scam: In a major case concerning a multi-crore scam in a slum rehabilitation scheme, her efforts were instrumental in getting the investigation transferred from the local police to the specialized Crime Branch.
- Service Law & Reservation Policy: Ms. Ayyappan has a vast experience in service laws. In a significant victory before the Maharashtra Administrative Tribunal, she successfully defended the appointments of 191 Police Sub-Inspectors, securing their positions and upholding the validity of the state's horizontal reservation policy. Recently, she was able to secure favorable orders in respect of a candidate aspiring for the Class-I post of Assistant Commissioner, Social Work for participating in the interview process from the High Court of Bombay.
- Land Acquisition & Compensation: In a landmark case involving a major Town Planning Scheme in Pune, she successfully argued that the state is liable to grant compensation for land acquired under the scheme. This judgment reversed a long-standing state practice and secured compensation worth several hundred crores for the affected landowners.
Additional Notable Cases
- Education & Caste Rights: She was successful in securing the admission of a student from a Scheduled Tribe category whose caste claim had been invalidated by the Scrutiny Committee.
- Banking & Securitisation: She secured a stay from the Debt Recovery Tribunal (DRT) against the attachment of a co-operative sugar factory under the SARFAESI Act.
- Election laws: Ms. Ayyappan has worked on and assisted including (drafting and research and co-chairing the senior Partners) on several important election matters including the defection of Vikhe Patil etc.
Other Contributions
Ms. Ayyappan is committed to giving back to the legal community and society. She maintains a strong association with her alma mater, frequently engaging with students to share her insights on litigation and legal practice. She has also been actively involved in pro-bono Public Interest Litigation, including a successful petition that led to a High Court directive for the removal of encroachments from government lands. Similarly, Ms. Ayyappan is part of our Firm's recruitment and training programme and is involved in mentoring the budding lawyers.
